Clinica Liberacion

Clínica Liberación | Liberation Clinic
Free Primary care | Cuidados primarios para personas LGBTQ

Clinica Liberación provides primary care and hormone treatment for over 250 LGBTQ+ undocumented and migrant patients in and around Phoenix. We are able to do this work with the power of our community and a wide network of collaborators who help provide different pieces of care. What does a Community Clinic governed by patients look like?

  • Self Governance: There is not one person or a board of directors who decide how the clinic runs, what services we offer, how we work with patients and more. Instead all of us as a collective of patients are part of running the clinic based on our own needs and our vision.

    • The Patient Committee is open to all patients with about 15 to 20 participating over the course of each year. We make decisions about what doctors we bring in, how we run our reception, what kind of bread we put out for snacks and everything in between

    • We are building toward a model where our doctors are committed to this structure and participate as members of the collective decision making process.

  • Mutual Aid: From patient to patient, we support each other both morally as we go through transition, or migratory processes or life as people facing transphobia and white supremacy in Phoenix. We also help each other overcome barriers to healthcare access by giving each other rides to the clinic or to pick up medicine, making lots of reminder calls about appointments, dealing with pharmacies who try to deny us gender affirming medication and more.

  • Autonomy: We believe that each of us as patients has the ability to make our own best decisions about how to care for our bodies and ourselves. We offer the guidance of western and traditional healers to have the best information. We say “nuestros cuerpos son bellos y somos validxs para aprender cómo cuidarnos”: “Our bodies are beautiful and we are able to learn how to care for ourselves.”

Community Wisdom: We are decolonizing the image of the clinic where a white doctor in a white coat comes to solve all your problems. Our clinic does not look like that. We understand that our patients and communities are wise in traditional remedies and healing practices, with the essential collaboration of doctors. And that these are not distractions or superstitions, but rather the core of healing our spiritual and physical bodies.

Our Clinic day: Is the first or second Sunday of each month from 9am-4pm
